Google makes the world a stage for a futuristic videogame

“The future is at stake and you have to choose a side. A mysterious energy was discovered by a group of scientist in Europe. The origin and purpose of this force is unknown, but some researchers believe that it influences the way we think. We must control it or be controlled by it”.

This is the way Ingress greets those interested in testing the application that was developed with Niantic Labs, available for download on Google Play and can only be accessed through an invitation.

Ingress is a role player game (RPG) that has the actual world as its stage, taking advantage of the characteristics of augmented reality and geo-positioning technology that make use of applications like Foursquare.

In the game there are two sides, the illuminated who seeks to obtain power from the source of energy and the Resistance, which fights to preserve humanity.

The users must choose the side they wish to play on and that is how the story begins. They must pass through distinct sites of the real world and scan them with their devices in order to obtain energy for their side.

Ingress requires that alliances be formed with other players in the world in order to plan the next steps. Communication is made through the “intelligence map”.

Google says in the app description that groups are more effective than one person. “The cooperation in between neighborhoods, cities and countries will be essential for victory”.

Clues and help for users are sent from the Niantic website.

To play Ingress it is necessary to enter the project webpage. As it is still in beta stage, you have to receive an invitation and on that page you can send an email to receive it. Then you have to download the application from Google Play. The app is optimized for smartphones.
