Intel is offering the 4G LTE with a brand new chip

This is not Intel’s first 4G LTE modem, but a previous single-mode chip was not able to fall back on older 3G and 2G networks. The ZMM 7160 can connect to GSM and HSPA networks, making it a better fit for wireless carrier support. The first product to feature the ZMM 7160 is a tablet, which should be better than a smartphone at absorbing hits to the battery life.

Herman Eul, General Manager for Intel’s Mobile and Communications Group, explained that the company will integrate the model with its application processors when they feel the moment is right. Having 4G LTE and an older network support rolled into a single modem could clear the way for more Bay Trail-powered Windows tablets.
