Intel has big plans for your data

From servers powered by the same chips that power smartphones to new types of data storage gear, web companies like Google and Facebook are reinventing the modern data center, and Intel is among the hardware makers striving to help them. Optical communications is the latest piece of the network efficiency puzzle, and it would be a big leap forward.

“The biggest hurdle to higher optical connections has been cost,” says Victor Krutul, the Marketing Director of Intel’s Silicon Photonics Solutions Group. He says the group’s new technology has been engineered with cost in mind, but prices are unknown for the moment.
